Life and career of Grace Jones
Modelling career in New York and Paris
When she was just 18, Grace Jones first stepped into the fashion scene in New York, but it was her bold move to Paris that marked the true beginning of her distinctive style.
There, she became a muse for high-fashion designers, celebrated for her willingness to defy the expected norms of the modelling industry. Her refusal to conform to conventions, like straightening her hair, was only the start of what would become her distinctive style.
Rise to fame as a music icon
Grace Jones would go on to evolve from a model to a muse to a full-fledged music icon. Unlike forgotten 70s bands, her albums in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, produced by disco pioneer Tom Moulton and featuring covers and original works, blew up the dance charts.
She later mixed things up even more with sounds of reggae, gospel and funk, adding her singularly captivating voice and visual style to every project. She also worked with top collaborators like Issey Miyake and Jean-Paul Goude – Grace Jones’ kid’s dad) – which further elevated her avant-garde image.
Of course, the public’s interest in her personal life also grew, leading to frequent questions as to who did Grace Jones have a child with.
Major performances and album releases
Grace Jones albums like Warm leatherette and Nightclubbing became milestones in her career. But she was not just known for her records (like Golden Earring hits) but also for her electrifying live performances.
Notable among these was A One Man Show in 1982, directed by Jean-Paul Goude (Grace Jones’ child’s dad), which featured high-concept stage designs and dramatic song interpretations, solidifying her status as a groundbreaking performer.
Her Hurricane Tour in 2009 marked a powerful return to the stage after nearly two decades, showcasing her enduring presence and dynamic performance style. Following her powerful performances, some fans were curious about who did Grace Jones have a child with.
More recently, her performance at the Meltdown Festival in 2022 showed that she had never lost her iconic stamina and charisma even in her 70s, particularly her hula-hoop rendition of ‘Slave to the rhythm’, which captivated audiences and reminded everyone of her lasting influence in the music world.
Acting roles
Aside from being a musical force, Grace Jones is also a movie star. Her roles in films like Conan the destroyer and the James Bond flick A view to a kill shattered the mould of traditional female characters, with Jones bringing a fierce presence and androgynous style that defied easy categorisation.
Relationship with Jean-Paul Goude

The 1970s marked the beginning of what would become a legendary pairing between Jean-Paul Goude and Grace Jones. Meeting at a time when Jones was transitioning between albums, Goude became a pivotal figure in capturing her avant-garde image.

Their work on the Island life album cover remains iconic; Goude’s technique of creating a composite image to portray Jones in an almost mythical pose showcases his mastery of image manipulation.
Paulo Goude carries on the culture
Paulo’s early model career

He has carved out his own path in both music and modelling.
Soon after finishing high school, Paulo stepped into the modelling scene, landing runway shows. After 9/11, runway opportunities became harder to come by. He later shifted his career focus more towards music, where he found renewed expression and purpose.
Playing in Grace Jones’s band
Like how the Cowsills members performed together, Goude played in Grace Jones’s band as a percussionist, contributing to the unique sound and energy of their performances.
He also showcased his talent as a songwriter by co-writing the thought-provoking song ‘Sunset sunrise’ for her 2008 album Hurricane, exploring the complicated interrelationship that exists between humanity and the natural world.
