Among those who responded were the Evans brothers, marking the start of what would become an iconic and moving band – U2. This pair began their career in Mullen’s humble kitchen, with the Evans brothers strumming on a homemade instrument they had to share.
From Feedback to The Hype
A group lineup would be narrowed down to just five members, with two of them being David and Dik Evans.
They first chose ‘Feedback’ as their band name because it was a technical term they were familiar with at the time. As for their starting music, it mainly consisted of cover or revival songs, which they acknowledged was not their strongest suit.
Some of their early influences included rising punk rock bands like Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Clash and Sex Pistols. The success of these punk rock bands helped the group realise that perfect musical skills weren’t necessary for success.
Then, in April 1977, Feedback performed their first paid concert at St. Fintan’s High School. Not long after this debut, they decided to rebrand themselves as ‘The Hype’ and, later on, ‘U2’.
