What Makes Cia Berg Unique As A Lead Vocalist?
It’s unsurprising that fans of alternative rock – a type of music characterised by its rejection of the mainstream – take great pride in the genre’s uniqueness, and when it comes to uniqueness in music, many will fondly remember Cia Berg, lead vocalist of the Swedish cult favourite group Whale.
For much of the 1990s, Berg has spellbound listeners with her unique vocal style and charismatic performances. Her contributions to Whale, especially the distinctive flair she added to the hit single ‘Hobo humpin’ slobo babe’, have undoubtedly solidified herself as one of the most memorable performers at the time.
At Jukebox Saturday Night, we stroll down memory lane and remember all your favourites, whether they’re forgotten 70s bands or artists like Cia Berg. This article covers Cia Berg’s personal background and musical journey and discusses what made her stand out as a vocalist.
Cia Berg band biography
In the ‘90s, Cia Berg brought her unique flair to the Swedish alternative rock band Whale, having been recruited by her then-boyfriend Henrik Schyffert.
Bursting onto the scene with their debut single ‘Hobo humpin’ slobo babe’ in 1993, Whale soon started generating fan engagement in a raw, authentic way. It was apparent that this new band had a fresh, distinctive take on music, blending elements of rock, funk and hip-hop to create a chaotic and unconventional work of art.
The song’s music video famously featured Berg in a cheeky portrayal, sporting braces and playing the role of a nymphet. And yet her unusual vocals were what caught the attention of many.
Berg’s almost vulgar style of singing, coupled with the aggressive chanting of her male bandmates, might come across as bizarre and unrefined to some. But make no mistake – this insane, boisterous energy is exactly why this song is so beloved to this day.
Personal style as a lead vocalist
The Cia Berg vocal style saw wide acclaim for its distinctiveness. Her singing voice has been described as that of a ‘tortured angel’ – soft yet hauntingly melodious.
Furthermore, her charisma as a performer is indisputable, catching the attention of fans with elaborate costumes and strange, choreographed movements.
In ‘Hobo humpin’ slobo babe’, for example, she claimed the hearts of many rock fans as she danced seductively in a full set of nerdy braces and a baby doll dress. Her various antics, including suggestively licking a lollipop and even a man’s armpit, added a distinctive quirkiness to the band’s image.
Overall, Berg’s eccentric aura in both music videos and live performances, coupled with her unorthodox style of singing, proved to be a hard combination to beat. Her unique presence left a lasting impression, setting her apart in the music industry.
Famous albums and hit songs of Whale
Cia Berg and Whale’s unusual blend of pop and rock began to make waves with the release of ‘Hobo humpin’ slobo babe’, and the public was eager to see more of their knack for blending styles and breaking conventions. This success led to the release of the album We care in 1995, which included the aforementioned single.
Just a few years later, in 1998, Whale came out with their second album, All disco dance must end in broken bones. This distinctive album is characterised by a vibrant mix of alternative rock and electronic synths – a testament to the band’s ability to meld various genres into cohesive, compelling sound. Among the standout tracks here are ‘Four big speakers’ and ‘Deliver the juice’.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Whale discography did not see the same level of success as their debut single, leading some to dismiss them as a one-hit-wonder. With that being said, this band’s full body of work is still definitely worth a try for those who appreciate the unconventional.
Whale’s time in the active music scene has long been over. But when people still get nostalgic for their performances to this day, you know they did something right.
