Remembering Cass Elliot: Daughter Owen’s Memoir On The Music Legend
Many people search for ‘Cass Elliot daughter’ to learn more about her family and personal life. And to Cass Elliot’s daughter, Owen Vanessa Elliot-Kugell, her mother is an iconic figure in the world of music.
She’s not alone in doing so. Fans of folk singer Cass Elliot, also known as Mama Cass, continue to honour her by keeping all the Cass Elliot albums and records popular. Cass Elliot faced rejection in her early years as a performer because of her appearance, but nonetheless rose to fame as a beloved member of The Mamas & the Papas, breaking barriers and setting new standards for artists like her.
Owen honours her mother in the memoir My Mama, Cass, where she shines more light on the life and legacy of Cass Elliot. Owen also addresses misconceptions about her mother’s death and even shares archival photos and memories from Cass Elliot’s famous friends, fans and colleagues.
The one and only Cass Elliot daughter, Owen, still works to uphold her mother’s legacy today. Here are three ways Cass Elliot continues to inspire fans all over the globe.
#1: Her perseverance
Cass Elliot, famously known as Mama Cass from her time as a member of the group The Mamas & the Papas, was born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 19, 1941.
After Elliot’s family moved to New York, they experienced some hardships until Elliot’s father succeeded in a food service venture.
She began her musical journey at a young age, showing a natural talent for music and theatre, but faced harsh criticisms about her appearance, particularly her weight. She also notably auditioned for and lost the stage role of Lady Marmelstein in I can get it for you wholesale to Barbra Streisand before pivoting to music.
Despite frequent rejections, her experiences in the bustling theatre scene of New York laid the groundwork for her future success with the best Cass Elliot music.
#2: Her sense of identity
Elliot took bold steps to carve out her own identity in an entertainment industry that often had very strict standards of beauty. In fact, within The Mamas & the Papas group, Elliot faced criticism from fellow member John Phillips in particular.
Allegedly, Phillips didn’t believe Elliot matched the image he envisioned for the group because of her size, and both Elliot and Phillips would attempt to rewrite the reason why Elliot took so long before officially being accepted into the group.
Famously on record for being unhappy with the nickname Mama Cass, she launched the Cass Elliot solo career after departing the band, publicly rejecting the appellation in her album Don’t call me Mama anymore.
This sense of identity has remained one of the most inspiring parts of Cass Elliot; daughter and vocal supporter Owen has continued to shine light on this in her memoir.
#3: Her artistry and musical prowess
Cass Elliot was known for her rich, soulful voice and charismatic presence, which helped define the sound of ‘60s music with hits like ‘California dreamin’’, ‘Monday, Monday’, and ‘Creeque Alley’. Her music effortlessly blended folk with pop sensibilities in fresh new ways and would contribute greatly to her posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Beyond her contributions to music, Cass Elliot is also remembered for challenging the typical standards of the entertainment industry. She was celebrated for her singing voice, despite not fitting the mould of what a performing star would be like in the era, and her success as a plus-sized woman helped to break down doors for other artists like her.
Cass Elliot remains a cherished figure in music history, celebrated for her unique talents, and Cass Elliot’s daughter keeps her light alive by celebrating her in all the ways she can, such as through her memoir.
