But aside from looking back at music videos and listening to the Dik Evans guitar style, you can celebrate his passion in other ways too. Here at Jukebox Saturday Night, we’ll share with you the exciting story behind this beloved artist, from his early career to his lasting musical influence.
Let us be your R’n’R heaven as we show you some ways that can help you enjoy Dik Evans’ discography and albums more.
Step #1: Get to know his early years.
Music in the family
Richard G. Evans, better known as Dik Evans, was born in 1957. Barking was his small hometown in England, and he has Welsh roots courtesy of his parents.
What’s interesting about this family dynamic is that he and his younger brother, David, would grow up to be guitarists for popular rock bands. He would be called Dik Evans, while his brother, the guitarist for U2, would go by the stage name ‘The Edge’.
But before all that, his family packed up and set off for Ireland when the boys were just kids. It was there that Dik and The Edge started their musical journey, sharing a single acoustic guitar that was bought by the younger sibling.
Step #2: Learn about his experience before U2.
Dik Evans: Early career
It all started in Dublin, on a seemingly ordinary day in 1976 when Larry Mullen Jr. pinned a note seeking musicians at Mount Temple Comprehensive School.
Among those who responded were the Evans brothers, marking the start of what would become an iconic and moving band – U2. This pair began their career in Mullen’s humble kitchen, with the Evans brothers strumming on a homemade instrument they had to share.
From Feedback to The Hype
A group lineup would be narrowed down to just five members, with two of them being David and Dik Evans.
They first chose ‘Feedback’ as their band name because it was a technical term they were familiar with at the time. As for their starting music, it mainly consisted of cover or revival songs, which they acknowledged was not their strongest suit.
Some of their early influences included rising punk rock bands like Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Clash and Sex Pistols. The success of these punk rock bands helped the group realise that perfect musical skills weren’t necessary for success.
Then, in April 1977, Feedback performed their first paid concert at St. Fintan’s High School. Not long after this debut, they decided to rebrand themselves as ‘The Hype’ and, later on, ‘U2’.
Step #3: Take a look at how he started other music ventures.
Early departure during U2
Dik Evans leaving the group in the late 1970s was a significant turning point for the band.
As they changed their name to ‘U2’ and transitioned into a four-piece lineup without Dik, they refined their sound and focused on the dynamics that would lead to their success, which included winning a talent contest set in Limerick, sponsored by the Evening Press and Harp Lager.
Dik Evans officially exited the band during a farewell concert held in Howth, at the Presbyterian Church Hall. At this event, the band performed cover songs back under the name ‘The Hype’, and Dik made a symbolic departure by walking offstage.
For Dik Evans, the move away from U2 was not an end but a new beginning, paving the way for his future endeavours with other bands and projects people often search for around the web.
However, his early contributions to the first few versions of U2 remained a testament to his role in the foundational days of the band, influencing their music even after his departure.
