5 Things That Earned The Cowsills Members The Pop Spotlight
Before they became a chart-topping 1960s act, The Cowsills members were just a typical American family who loved music. So, what exactly was it about their ensemble that made them rise to fame?
Here at Jukebox Saturday Night, we love taking you down memory lane to look back at the great acts of the earlier decades, from forgotten 70s bands to famous 1960s pop bands like The Cowsills. So, read on to learn more about this iconic family pop band and discover the key things that launched them to stardom.
#1: The family image
The Cowsills members rose to fame in the 1960s, an era where the most prominently loved and depicted of everyday life in media was the traditional, nuclear, middle-class family. As a band made up of siblings – and at some moments in their career, their mother as well – The Cowsills was the right puzzle piece to fit this image.
Having the whole gang together was an entertaining experience for music listeners. Not only did it feed into the beloved harmonious family branding, but seeing a family and band dynamic morph into one in The Cowsills was an interesting sight as well.
The Cowsills band history
Even in their earliest days, when they were just performing at church school dances in Stark County, Ohio, The Cowsills were already a family act. The original members were Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill. John followed shortly after the group was formed. Meanwhile, their parents, Bud and Barbara, managed their kids’ careers.
Eventually, as The Cowsills rose to fame, their other siblings Susan and Paul also joined in, along with their mother Barbara. The only Cowsill kid who didn’t join the band while it was together was Richard, Bob’s fraternal twin. However, he joined his siblings much later on during some reunion performances.
#2: Upbeat and uplifting hit-makers
As the 1960s revealed more and more growing social unrest, it’s no surprise that many sought to embrace optimism. Luckily for those people, that’s what this family band’s music embodied.
The Cowsills members were known and celebrated for their upbeat, feel-good pop. They blended elements of bubblegum pop, psychedelic pop, and rock and roll, and that resulted in tracks that were bright and cheerful but still sonically interesting and unique.
Their songs’ infectious melodies and sunny lyrics didn’t just uplift listeners’ energy; these also led to irresistibly catchy and radio-friendly tunes. It was exactly their brand of accessible, high-energy music that led the band to become a big name in the industry.
#3: The novelty of young talent
While the musical talent that the Cowsills family possessed would warrant praise at any age, it was especially impressive because of how young they were. There’s something particularly special about seeing kids be such powerhouse performers, and that’s exactly what the Cowsills kids were.
Being able to understand, compose and sing harmonies as a big group is a difficult aspect of the craft, and yet, that’s exactly what The Cowsills members were known for, even at their young age. In fact, the youngest sibling, Susan, was only eight years old by the time the group expanded to its full family membership.
#4: Taking on television
The Cowsills’ heyday coincided with the rise of talk shows and the peak popularity of variety shows. So, their various TV appearances definitely gave their careers an extra boost, exposing them to new and wider audiences.
Bob even credits their first big break to a TV show program – the Today Show. He recounted that someone from the show had seen them perform and invited them on as a guest. ‘So we went on the Today show and someone from Mercury Records saw us, which ultimately led to our signing with that label,’ he said.
Throughout the years, The Cowsills members would go on to appear in more shows. Their long list of appearances includes two for The Ed Sullivan Show, another two for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one for the Johnny Cash Show.
