An old flashback to the start of television on TCN-9.
Narrated and introduced by the late great Bruce Gyngell and then later commentated by Brian Henderson. Bruce Gyngell went out of news reading later on and into the executive world, becoming one of the most astute and loved senior executives of all time. Once you knew Bruce you really appreciated his knowledge and foresight of the industry as to what would be popular and win ratings.
Interesting that Johnny O’Connor sung about being all dressed up in a light blue shirt as in early TV most were requested to wear a light blue shirt, not white, not striped.
We also love later in the clip the flashback to “Australia’s’ Amateur Hour with Terry Dear – the forerunner too many shows being regurgitated today like Australia’s got talent. There was no blatant advertising for the sponsors back in the day were there, ha!!… I guess things definitely haven’t changed!
